In 2021, Jill Rafferty didn’t know the cramps she experienced for months would lead her to Karmanos Cancer Institute one day. The stage IV colon cancer survivor said she wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Karmanos. She details her cancer journey, especially her patient-doctor relationship with Anthony Shields, M.D., Ph.D., medical oncologist and leader of the Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Oncology and the Phase 1 Clinical Trials Multidisciplinary Teams. Rafferty said Dr. Shields gave her and her husband so much hope. She donates to Karmanos in many ways, including using social media to encourage others to give by telling her story and selling cookies.
