In late 2007, Tom Kalas decided to seek cancer care at an out-of-state cancer institution when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. However, he and his wife quickly realized they needed to find better care close to home. So, they returned to Michigan at the beginning of 2008 to seek care at Karmanos. Kalas’ oncology team, led by Voravit Ratanatharathorn, M.D., a now-retired Karmanos hematologist and medical oncologist, successfully completed a bone marrow transplant and subsequent treatments. Since then, Kalas’ family and business have supported Karmanos, especially the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation Program.
