Volunteer at McLaren Northern Michigan
On any given day, visitors to McLaren Northern Michigan will see volunteers performing helpful tasks throughout the organization. Volunteers from all walks of life donate their time to fundraise, network, and sing the praises of the quality care and services provided by McLaren Northern Michigan, its colleagues, and its providers. The talents shared and compassionate caring that volunteers provide is indeed remarkable.
The volunteer program at McLaren Northern Michigan provides a rewarding experience for students and community members 18 years of age or older. Volunteers support many departments and projects within the Hospital, Foundation and Cheboygan Campus.
Duties
In order to attract and retain the best volunteers for McLaren Northern Michigan, we try to match talents and skills to areas of need. (Volunteer opportunities encompass many aspects of a hospitalization or a visit to the Hospital to see a friend or have a diagnostic procedure.) Volunteers may greet you at the door, assist you to your room, prepare you for the surgical team, deliver patient mail while you are hospitalized and escort you to the door upon discharge.

How To Become A Volunteer
If you have decided to give your time to McLaren Northern Michigan, your next step is to complete an application (see link below).
Once your application is received, we will review current volunteer openings and determine if any align with your interests and availabilities. We will contact you if there is a match. If a match is not identified, we will keep your application on file for six months.
If a match is identified, you will be contacted for an interview. We will check the references listed on your application and conduct a background check. If you are selected to be a volunteer at McLaren Northern Michigan, you will need to:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be in good physical and mental health without restrictions or communicable health conditions
- Have documentation of a negative TB test completed within the previous 12 months or we will provide testing
- Have a copy of immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox). If you have no records, titers results are required.
- Have documentation of receipt of the current annual seasonal Flu Vaccine. (Our staff can look this info up in MCIR if you do not have documentation and were immunized in Michigan.) If you haven’t received the vaccine, it will be provided to you. Summer volunteers (here only May, June, July, August, September) are exempt from this requirement.
- Have documentation of receipt of COVID-19 Vaccine (complete series). (Our staff can look this info up in MCIR if you do not have documentation and were immunized in Michigan.) If you haven’t received the vaccine, it will be provided to you and the complete series must be completed prior to starting as a volunteer.

Once you have been cleared through this initial process, the next steps will be to obtain an identification badge and volunteer vest/coat required for your position. We will make sure you are oriented to our organization and receive appropriate training for your assignment.
