CURE, in Collaboration with Karmanos' Office of Cancer Health Equity and Community Engagement, Educates the Community About Metastatic Breast Cancer

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, patients, survivors, and advocates gathered at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit to learn about metastatic breast cancer, including initial and ongoing treatments, biomarkers and overall treatment strategies. Organized by CURE in collaboration with the Office of Cancer Health Equity and Community Engagement (OCHECE) at Karmanos, this event provided an opportunity for community members to engage with experts in metastatic breast cancer, enhancing their understanding of treatment options and lifestyle adjustments.

Several organizations were present, including Susan G. Komen and Stemline Therapeutics. Each organization provided valuable resources and fun swag items for attendees prior to the meeting. Additionally, OCHECE shared information about the CAPABLE program, an exercise initiative designed specifically for cancer survivors.

The presentations covered a range of topics, including ER+ and HER2 metastatic breast cancer diagnoses and detailed typical treatment plans. Lubina Arjyal, M.D., medical oncologist and member of the Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos, along with second-year fellow Shouq Kherallah, M.D., delivered an informative session filled with educational resources, advice and support. The hour-and-a-half-long presentation also explored example treatment strategies to assist those unfamiliar with the process.
