Pharmacy: Oncology Specialty Residency
Location
The Karmanos Cancer Center (KCC) is the patient care enterprise of the Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI). Karmanos Cancer Institute is a National Cancer Institute – designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in association with Wayne State University. Karmanos is dedicated to state-of-the-art patient care, clinical / basic research, education, and community outreach. We have over 300 open oncology clinical trials, and are members of SWOG, RTOG, GOG, and COG cooperative groups.
Program
The ASHP accredited Oncology Specialty Residency at Karmanos is a twelve-month program that provides advanced clinical training and experience in the management of patients with malignant disease. The Oncology resident will have the opportunity to collaborate with hematologist/oncologists, fellows, clinical pharmacy specialists, and Wayne State University faculty to build on and gain knowledge in a wide variety of areas. The oncology specialized residency program will be tailored to the needs of the resident based on previous clinical experience.
The resident is required to complete the core rotations set forth for the residency program, as well as participate in longitudinal ambulatory experiences. Optional experience is offered in infectious disease, critical care and nutrition support with the focus of an oncology setting. The resident is expected to participate in patient care rounds, develop expertise in providing pharmaceutical care to hematology/oncology patients.
Objectives
This residency is designed to prepare the resident for board certification as an oncology pharmacy specialist. The resident will acquire an extensive body of knowledge and sophisticated clinical experience that will allow for the provision of advanced pharmaceutical care to patients with malignant disease.

Responsibility
- Provision of pharmaceutical care to oncology and hematology patients. This will include participation at daily work and/or attending rounds, pharmaceutical care documentation, and informal and/or formal educational programs to other health care professionals.
- Provide patient education to oncology and hematology patients.
- Participate in the development of clinical pathways and drug-use protocols for the hospital in conjunction with the KCC Hematology/Oncology P&T Committee.
- Participate in Oncology Journal Club.
- Completion of a research project which will include protocol design, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation and submission for publication. Collaboration with other health care professionals will be dependent on the nature of the project.
- Presentation of research project at HOPA and ASHP .
- Provide leadership to pharmacy practice residents and doctor of pharmacy students.
- Assistance in the training of undergraduate and graduate Wayne State University students. This will include assistance in precepting students on extern and clerkship rotations. Opportunities for formal lectures are available.
- Formal educational presentations to pharmacy personnel.
Applicants
The applicant must be a graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited in the United States and should be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan. The applicant must have completed the pharmacy practice residency or PGY1 training.
