As a leader in cancer research, Karmanos is able to offer patients access to innovative treatments and clinical trials that are often times not available anywhere else.
To offer hope and longer life to patients with all types of cancer, Karmanos offers the latest types of therapy through our clinical trials program. Through clinical trials, we are creating new knowledge about how therapies fight cancer and provide national leadership in testing these new therapies.
We understand that cancer is a complex disease that demands complex care. We provide each patient with a dynamic, carefully constructed treatment plan focused on their specific cancer and their unique needs.
We listen to you to design a plan that provides you with respect, compassionate care and is responsive to your emotional and practical concerns.
The Karmanos Cancer Institute offers the Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator, a state-of-the-art image-guided radiation therapy technology.
The Varian TrueBeam provides the most precise treatment delivery available because it is image guided, using both conventional X-ray and cone-beam CAT scan technology to locate the tumor and precisely deliver radiation to the right location.
This important technology responds to the variety of physiological factors which can cause the location and shape of a patient’s tumor(s) and normal tissue structures to change during the course of therapy, including weight fluctuation and even breathing during treatment.
Before each treatment, the Varian TrueBeam allows physicians to identify exactly where cancerous cells end and healthy cells begin.
In addition, it provides faster treatment through its volumetric arc therapy (Varian’s RapidArc®). How fast? These linear accelerators allow Karmanos to deliver a highly conformal dose of radiation in a continuous arc around the patient in only one to two minutes. The faster the treatment is delivered, the less time the patient’s internal and external anatomy has to move after image guidance is completed.
The Varian TrueBeam can be used on any cancer disease site treated with radiation therapy.
