HealthLink Model
Michigan Cancer HealthLink (HealthLink) brings together community members and cancer researchers to develop research ideas and educational and service-based programs. By having community members and researchers work together, targeted research and programming can be developed to improve a wide range of health outcomes. Based on an existing model established in New York City, Cancer Action Councils (CACs) are groups of cancer patients, survivors and community volunteers, reflecting diverse neighborhoods, communities and populations. CAC members use their personal experience and knowledge of their respective communities to set research priorities and inform Karmanos’ research agenda.
An adaptation of HealthLink's “Building Your Capacity (BYC): Advancing Research through Community Engagement” curriculum has been shared with ten CACs throughout Michigan, with more being added regularly throughout Michigan. The BYC program provides participants with a basic understanding of the academic research process and familiarizes them with research terminology and concepts to increase their overall level of confidence in engaging with academic researchers.
