Getting a Second Opinion
Karmanos Detroit or Farmington Hills
Before starting treatment, it is always recommended that you seek a second opinion about the diagnosis and treatment plan. Some insurance companies require a second opinion; others may cover a second opinion if the patient requests it.
Karmanos physicians are available to meet with patients for a second opinion. Call 1-800-KARMANOS (1-800-527-6266) to make an appointment with a Karmanos physician, or request an appointment online.
There are a number of ways to find a doctor who can give you a second opinion:
-
Your doctor may be able to suggest specialists to consult.
- The Cancer Information Service, at (800) 4-CANCER, can provide information about cancer treatment facilities all over the country, including cancer centers and other programs supported by the National Cancer Institute.
- You can get the names of doctors from your local medical society, a nearby hospital or a medical school.
- The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has a list of doctors who have met certain education and training requirements and have passed specialty examinations. The Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists lists doctors' names along with their specialty and their educational background. The directory is available in most public libraries. Also, ABMS offers this information online here.
Getting a second opinion is important because it will help you understand treatment options and help you make informed decisions about which treatment option is best for you.
